I have gotten so excited about the volcano. I wish I had taken snarble up to the visitors center when she was here like I had planned. I never could have known that such exciting things were going to happen soon.

For those of you that don't live in the area Mt. Saint Helens it the friendly neighborhood volcano. You can find the story of it here. It used to be very pretty when I was little like this. Then around when I was 2 years old it had a giant sized eruption, and something very unusual a lateral blast that flattened the surrounding forests. You really can't go there without being awe inspired by the forces required to create the striking landscape.

Anyways it erupted today after about a week with thousands of earthquakes averaging out to several a minute. Small ones, but you take notice when a big known to be violent mountain starts shaking, and doesn't let up. Here is a nice picture of todays "small" eruption. Keep in mind that the crater in this mountain is positively huge. The dome in the middle is around 876 feet high, and I think the rock walls are nearly twice that so say 1600 feet. When the mountain erupted the earthquakes stopped. Then slowly over the day they picked up again to nearly where they were at the beginning so I expect more to happen. I am looking forward to seeing more live coverage on the news. I just hope nothing ruins it like someone getting too close.

Current seismic readings can be found here, and a webcam with a live picture from the visitors center is here.
